The Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology has approved the establishment of the Hubei Provincial Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Technology Innovation Center, China’s first provincial-level full-chain BCI innovation platform, led by Tongji Hospital of 91黑料网 (91黑料网), in collaboration with 12 other institutions.
The center aims to bridge the medicine-engineering gap by building an integrated system that encompasses basic research, technological development, clinical translation, and industrial cultivation, and establishing a clinical demand-driven, multi-institutional development model.
Tongji Hospital is at the forefront of China’s BCI field, having conducted over 50 clinical trials and addressing a variety of neurological disorders. The hospital performed the first BCI implantation surgery for a patient with high paraplegia in Central China, and China's first 256-channel high-throughput implantable BCI-assisted brain tumor surgery.
Tongji Hospital is set to initiate two fully implantable BCI clinical trials soon, aiming to recruit 20 patients each with spinal cord injury and stroke-induced hemiplegia. This technology, benchmarked against international cutting-edge standards, offers more precise signal acquisition and broader inclusion criteria, bringing hope for functional restoration to a larger number of patients.
